Understanding TMJ & Jaw Pain
Jaw tension and discomfort can be associated with overactivity of the muscles used for chewing, particularly the masseter muscles. These muscles can become more active with habits such as clenching or grinding.
The Masseter Muscles
The masseters are located along the sides of the jaw and play an important role in chewing and jaw movement. When these muscles are repeatedly activated, they can become tense, fatigued or enlarged.
Jaw muscle overactivity may be associated with:
Facial or jaw discomfort
Worn down teeth and dental problems
Headaches
Changes in the appearance of the lower face
It's More Than Just Jaw Pain
Jaw discomfort can have a number of contributing factors, and not all jaw pain is related to muscle activity. Your symptoms, medical history and individual anatomy will be assessed during consultation to determine whether treatment may be appropriate.
At Evara, we believe understanding these processes is an important part of making informed decisions about your skin and facial aesthetics. Your individual anatomy, skin, movement and concerns are all considered during a consultation.
